What is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontics, also known as prosthetic dentistry, is the dental specialty focused on diagnosing, treatment planning, rehabilitating, and maintaining the oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of dental patients. It is one of the nine recognized specialties by the American Dental Association.

A Prosthodontist is a dental specialist with advanced training in restoring natural teeth and replacing missing teeth. After completing dental school, they undergo an additional three years of specialized training to become experts in advanced dental restoration and rehabilitation techniques.

Prosthodontists are proficient in various dental procedures, including:

  • Routine restorations
  • Crowns
  • Caps
  • Bridges
  • Veneers
  • Removable partial dentures
  • Dental implants
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD/TMJ) treatment
  • Sleep-related disorders treatment

Prosthodontists prioritize both the aesthetics of the smile and the improved function of the bite while ensuring the most conservative approach possible.

Why Should I Choose a “Board Certified Prosthodontist”?

A board-certified prosthodontist has completed an ADA-accredited post-graduate prosthodontics program and passed a rigorous series of exams administered by the American Board of Prosthodontics (ABP). These exams include both written and oral assessments covering prosthodontic, surgical, and medical theory and literature.

Becoming board certified requires passing a four-part exam, which evaluates completed patient treatments from start to finish, as well as the rationale, prognosis, and maintenance of the provided treatment. Diplomates of the American Board of Prosthodontics are individuals dedicated to ongoing learning, upholding the highest ethical standards, providing quality patient care, and advancing the field of prosthodontics. To maintain board certification, a prosthodontist must recertify every eight years.

Is a Prosthodontist Different from a “Cosmetic Dentist”?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes nine dental specialties, and "cosmetic dentistry" is not among them. Prosthodontists undergo extensive training and gain experience in dental aesthetics and cosmetics during their three-year graduate programs. While some cosmetic dentists may receive training through seminars or a series of courses, it is typically limited to weekend or possibly weeklong courses.

Will the Prosthodontist Complete All of My Required Treatment?

The prosthodontist is best seen as the "architect" of your dental project. They envision the final outcome, considering both the aesthetics of your smile and the improved function of your bite. Other dental specialists may also be involved in your treatment to ensure a solid foundation for your restorations. Each prosthodontist creates a customized treatment plan for every patient, determining if adjunctive procedures by another doctor are necessary.
