Damage from Teeth Grinding

Feb 28, 2015

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is a common problem. Almost a third of the American population has r

eported cases of bruxism. Once diagnosed, it can be treated a number of ways. If you think you may grind your teeth, talk to your dentist about possible solutions.

Common symptoms of bruxism include jaw muscle pain, hypersensitivity, and shoulder, neck and head pain. Constant grinding can also wear down teeth, causing damage and breaking. Grinding can even break fillings and crowns.

There is asleep grinding and awake grinding. Most people grind their teeth while asleep and don’t realize they’re doing it. Others may do it without thinking about it. More females than males tend to grind their teeth when awake.

There are a few common treatments available for this condition. One is therapy. Teeth grinding can be stress induced, so stress management therapy can help. Your dentist can give you the best information regarding your case. They may give you a mouth guard to wear at night and stop you from grinding your teeth.

If you suspect you grind your teeth, make an appointment with you dentist to start treatment.
